In math, we have finished our lessons from Chapter 4. The children have been learning how to use addition to check their answers to subtraction problems, as well as how to do two-step word problems. We will be reviewing for a test on Wednesday. Review pages will come home on Monday to help students study. Reviewing basic facts in addition and subtraction would also be beneficial.
The students are learning how to locate text evidence to support their thinking to verbal and written questions about books they read. We have been practicing in guided reading groups, as well as by using non-fiction articles.
In writing, the children have been working hard on a second opinion letter draft. This time, they changed their focus from the best character in a book, to the best book overall. They picked three reasons why they enjoy the book, including favorite parts, the illustrations, and lessons they learned from the book.
We started a unit in social studies on economics. The students have been learning the difference between producers and consumers, goods and services, and needs and wants. The children put together story boards with captions that explained the steps of production on a farm, as well as how the crops are transported to the consumer to buy. They also participated in a "shopping trip" to learn more about spending and saving using a budget. Next week, we will begin our Market Days project, which will give students hands-on experience in creating a good to sell.
