Weekly Update 1/31/14

Important Reminders:

We still need a parent volunteer to lead our class Valentine's Day party.  Please let me know as soon as possible if you could help out.  It would be much appreciated!  Thanks!

Students will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart next week during their gym class.  Please turn in any remaining donation envelopes next week.  Thank you.

Students will be treated to a Little Caesar's lunch from Dr. Parker on Thursday, Feb. 6th to reward them for their hard work and improvements in their monthly Evaluate tests in reading and math!  I am very proud of the class's achievements!

I am happy to report that the class has also earned a class reward for good behavior choices.  We will be having a "nutritious read-in", also on Thursday the 6th.  Students may wear their pajamas to school if they wish.  They can also bring a healthy snack and either a small stuffed animal OR pillow.  The children will be able to relax and read while enjoying their snacks and some calm music.

Monday starts collection time for the Box Tops for Education contest.  Please send in any box tops you have with your child by Friday, February 7th.  The winning classroom will receive a popcorn party.

Class Updates:

In math, we have been learning the procedures for long division.  The students are using the saying "Does McDonald's Sell Cheese Burgers?" to help them remember the steps of divide, multiply, subtract, check, and bring down.  So far, we have worked our way up to dividing a three-digit number by a one-digit number. We will continue practicing and reviewing for a test on Thursday.  Here is a link to a Study Jams video that describes the steps to long division if your child needs help practicing at home.  Kids also are working on "Frog Packets" together for extra practice and playing games like "Keep the Leftovers" to help them with the concept of remainders in division.

In reading, we have been continuing to practice making inferences.  We also are working on identifying the author's purpose of a variety of texts we read.  The children are using the phrase, "Author's purpose is as easy as PIE!" to help them remember the three main purposes, which are to persuade, inform, and entertain.

In writing, we finished publishing our final drafts of our persuasive essays.  Here are a few pictures of students working hard on editing and publishing, as well as some finished cover designs:

We have also started our new unit on informational writing.  The end product of our work will be a four chapter mini-book on a topic related to fourth grade science or social studies.  The students have been working this week on choosing good topics and creating a graphic organizer in their writing notebooks to outline a plan for their books.  The children also worked in groups to examine non-fiction books to see how they were organized into introductions, chapters, and headings.  Next week, we will learn about how to research, take notes, and what it means to paraphrase.

We are moving on to our next chapter in social studies.  The class will be learning about how Missouri became a state through the Missouri Compromise.  Other topics in Chapter 5 include, pioneers, the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails, and the Gold Rush.

Weekly Update 1/25/14

Important Reminders:

We are in need of a leader for our room's Valentine's Day party.  If you would be willing to volunteer to help fill this role, please let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you!

Our room is collecting soda can tab tops to support a K-Kids fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities.  If you have any tab tops you can donate, please send them to school with your child.  The collection will run though April.

Class Updates:

In math, we have finished up our units on multiplication.  Next week, we will be working on division and learning the steps to long division problems.  In addition, we will be practicing our fluency with our division basic facts.

In reading we have been reading some wonderful books to practice making inferences and drawing conclusions.  We have almost reached the end of our persuasive writing unit.  This week students learned the importance of acknowledging the counter-argument in a persuasive essay.  We learned several different ways we could address the reader's feelings in our conclusion paragraphs, but still make strong arguments towards our own point of views. The children are working on editing their drafts and have started the final draft process.  Our next unit in writing will focus on writing informational texts.

In social studies, we are wrapping up Ch. 4 and will have a test on Wednesday.  As a fun way to look at the Lewis and Clark expedition from a different perspective, we will be reading Lewis and Clark and Me, a book that is written from Lewis's dog, Seaman's point of view.  Our next unit in social studies will cover how Missouri became state.

Weekly Update 1/19/14

Important Reminders:

Due to all of the snow days, the PRISM entry deadline has been extended to January 22nd.  Forms were sent home in the Friday mail folders.  If you child has already filled out a form, there is no need to fill out a second one.  If your child has already entered PRISM, they should also have received a box order form. Please note that the box order form is a separate form and boxes cost $3.00.

Class Updates:

Since we have returned from break, the students have been learning the steps to multiplying large numbers. We will be reviewing what we have learned on Tuesday and have a Chapter 12 Test on Wednesday.  A study guide was sent home on Friday.  Our next unit will be on division.  Please make sure your child is reviewing their multiplication and division basic facts regularly.  Here is a video that may be helpful with practicing how to do large multiplication problems for Wednesday's test:  Turtle Head Multiplication

In reading, we are continuing to practice making predictions based on text evidence.  We have also started to learn about making inferences about what we read.  We played a game called "What's in the Box?" where students had to use clues plus their background knowledge to guess what was hidden in a box.  The game helps introduce the idea of making inferences and "reading between the lines".  We will continue to learn about making inferences that require deeper thinking this week.

In writing, we are working on a persuasive essay.  Students have studied what persuasive essays have in common with the opinion essays they wrote before break.  We have also emphasized the differences between the similar genres of writing, including that persuasive writing often deals with topics or issues that affect many people and not just one person.  The class in currently in the drafting process and we will be working on revising and editing this week.

In social studies, the children are learning about the first European explorers in the mid-west region who were searching for the Northwest Passage, the first settlements in Missouri, and the founders of St. Louis. We have also started to study the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Please make sure your child is studying the social studies vocabulary words and names of important people on their study guides, as this is a short chapter.

We ended our week with our school spelling bee.  I am very proud of our two class representatives, Ramy and Emma, who did a fantastic job!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the holidays, and now an extended break.  With all of the snow, I thought it would be a good day to post a few pictures from our winter party and latest buddy activity.  Enjoy!
