Class Updates:
Red Ribbon Week wrapped up with "Dress like your Favorite Character Day". Several students came to school with creative costumes, from the Queen of Hearts to Junie B. Jones!
We are wrapping up Chapter 5 in math. The students have been learning to write numbers in word form and are practicing comparing the size of numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. We will be reviewing the chapter and having a test on Friday, November 3.
The children are practicing their descriptive writing skills. We have learned how to incorporate adjectives and comparisons into writing to help the reader visualize. Each student created a monster from construction paper as their inspiration for their descriptive writing piece. They are almost done with their drafts and will be working on final copies next week. I think you will be impressed with their hard work! Pictures to come next week!
We also worked on visualizing in reading this week. Student listened to the book The Gruffalo without being able to see the pictures. They had to listen very carefully to hear how the author described the creature called the Gruffalo. Then, students were able to draw what they visualized and compare it to what the illustrator's version of the Gruffalo was. It was a great way to get ready for monster descriptive writing. We also started a non-fiction unit in reading. We are using the book Tigers to practice comprehension skills of non-fiction. The children recorded their background knowledge of what they already know about tigers, generated questions they wanted to learn about tigers, and now as we read we are recording new facts we are learning about tigers. We ended our week with a fun Scholastic News article about giant pumpkins to help introduce text features!
All of our caterpillars are in chrysalis and we are anxiously awaiting them to hatch. Hopefully next week! Here are some additional pictures from the Butterfly House:
In social studies, we wrapped up our lessons on maps and geography from Lessons 3 and 4. We covered the difference between a physical and political map, and learned about different types of landforms and bodies of water. The children played a partner game to practice identifying the landforms. Now, students will get to choose from three culminating project ideas that involve drawing, writing, technology, and STEM engineering to create a variety of maps. This should be an engaging way for students to demonstrate their understanding!
