Class Updates:
We had a great time on our field trip to the Butterfly House! Students learned about the life cycle of the butterfly and they were able to use their five senses and magnifying glasses to examine eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies. Then, we were able to explore the butterfly habitat to view many beautiful species. Thank you to our parent volunteers who helped out!
Speaking of butterflies, look at how much our class caterpillars have grown and changed since they first arrived! All of the caterpillars had formed their chrysalises by the week's end. The students made new entries in their butterfly observation books and also drew diagrams of what they saw with labels.
In math, we have started our place value chapter. The students are learning to read and write numbers up to 1,000. They are also practicing how to write numbers in expanded form and to represent them with base ten block models. Our new center activities are helping the kids review even and odd numbers, skip counting, and arrays from our last chapter. Next week, we will cover lessons 4-6 from Chapter 5.
In reading, we are practicing our visualizing skills and getting ready to begin our non-fiction unit soon.We celebrated our published personal narrative stories in writing by having a gallery walk with some of the other 2nd grade classes. The children were able to read each other's work and leave positive comments for each other.
We also took time to write thank you letters to the people who helped fund our Donor's Choose Project. These will soon be mailed to Donor's Choose so that those who helped us purchase our flexible seating items can see the feedback from the class!
The students played a partner board game in social studies to practice using a compass rose to follow directions. We also compared reading a map vs. a globe and learned about the continents and oceans on our planet.
