Class Update 10/14/17

Important Reminders:

Tuesday is our field trip to the Butterfly House. We will return to school after our normal lunch time, so students will need to bring their lunch to school that day or order a sack lunch from the cafeteria. Please make sure students arrive to school on time, as we will be leaving first thing in the morning.

Friday is the last day to order Scholastic Book Orders for October. This week also marks the start of our school's fall book fair. Fliers will be coming home that highlight some of the books that will be for sale. Students will have a day to preview the books on Wednesday.  The book fair will run through the week of conferences.

Class Updates:

Take a look at some of the beautiful fall artwork the students created in art class!

We will be starting Chapter 5 in math, which is all about place value to 1,000. We will focus on lessons 1-3 this week. Last week, we reviewed arrays from Chapter 2 by creating skyscrapers that had windows in the form of arrays. After students designed their skyscrapers, they wrote repeated addition sentences to match the number of windows on their buildings. We are combining them together to make an urban skyline. This was a fun way to bring together what we have been learning in social studies and math!

It was an exciting week in science as our five caterpillars arrived and we learned all about the butterfly life cycle! The students made initial observations of the caterpillars in their Butterfly Observation Books. They will continue to draw and write about the changes they see over the next few weeks. The children also made diagrams to illustrate the steps in the butterfly life cycle.

We have started our maps unit in social studies. So far, we have been learning that maps can be used for different purposes and that maps have keys that help us read them. We practiced searching for "hidden treasure" (stickers!) in our room by creating a map of our classroom. The kids had a blast taking turns hiding the treasure!

The children are working on the publishing phase of the writing process for their personal narratives. Each student has picked which draft they want to make a published copy of and they are in the process of completing them. Once they are finished, we will have a celebration to share our work.

In reading, the students are learning about story elements in fiction books, including characters, setting, problem, and solution. They will also be using the story elements to help them retell the important events of the story in order.
