Class Updates:

We are continuing to learn about measurement in math. We have been exploring metric measurement of length in centimeters and meters. It is important that students know there are 100 centimeters in a meter. Students are finding the difference between two measurements to compare the length of objects as well. We will finish the remaining lessons in Chapter 11 this week and have a test on Thursday. Review pages will come home on Wednesday. Our last math chapter will be on geometry.

All students are participating in a book club to end the year in reading. The children are reading chapter books and using post-it notes to make connections, ask questions, and mark important or surprising parts. They discuss what they read and help each other clarify tricky words.

In writing, students have continued to publish poems. They learned how to write acrostic poems about spring that contained alliteration. The children are also making concrete poems that are shaped like they topic of the poem.

The students had two more Junior Achievement lessons on community this week. They worked in teams to "make donuts" for our donut factory and learned that both quantity of donuts and quality of donuts are important when producing goods to sell. Each student also was assigned a job within our community and learned about reasons we pay taxes from our paychecks.

In science, we had a busy week growing radish seeds. We compared old seeds with new seeds to see which would grow better. The children were excited to see the roots sprout from the seeds! They learned that roots take in water and minerals from the soil in order to grow. Students recorded the observations of their seeds all week. I am impressed by their work!

The students had fun exploring cultural displays created by students in the building. They were able to learn about countries from all over the world!

We have been learning about customary measurement for length in math. Students have been busy estimating and measuring a variety of objects with rulers, yard sticks, and measuring tapes. We will continue to explore measurement this week, focusing on lessons 5 - 9 in Chapter 11. It is important that your child knows the basic measurement conversions below:

  • 12 inches = 1 foot
  • 36 inches = 1 yard
  • 3 feet = 1 yard

Staff from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis came to teach a lesson to the class on the importance of saving money. The children learned how to make a line graph to track spending and received pencils made from recycled paper money!

We are wrapping up our series book unit in reading. Next week, we will begin book clubs. This is a fun way to end the school year where students will get to choose a chapter book to read closely and discuss together.

In writing, the students have been working hard on using precise language, repetition, and comparisons in their poems. They also learned about similes and wrote simile poems that described themselves.

Junior Achievement lessons have started. Thank you to Mrs. McRae for volunteering to teach the students about communities. The children will do hands-on activities to find out more about how a business manufactures goods to sell.

We have started a unit in science on plants. To kick off the unit, we did a Mystery Science lesson that explored the question, "How can a tree travel halfway around the world"? The children learned about seeds and seed dispersal by wind, water, and animals. Each child made their own model of a seed with a structure that helps it fly. We tested the models both indoors and outdoors to see which models traveled the farthest and avoided landing shade.

Class Updates:

Long has been celebrating cultural diversity all year. This week each classroom decorated their doors to display a message about diversity. Take a look at how our door turned out!

We have finished our unit on telling time in math. This week we will begin Chapter 11 on measurement. We will focus on lessons 1-4, which cover customary measurement in inches, feet, and yards.

In reading, we read an interesting Scholastic News article and watched a corresponding video about Amelia Earhart. It was a great review on using text features to learn more information and the kids were intrigued by the mystery. We also continued to learn about what good readers do while reading series books, including notice the author's choice of precise language that helps us see the characters and setting in our minds.

Poetry continues to be our focus in writing. Students are practicing how to edit their poems carefully for correct spelling and revise them to include the best word choice to convey the meaning of the poem. We learned how to write haiku poems as well. They are a special kind of poem with only three lines. The lines follow a syllable pattern of 5, 7, 5.

We have finished our study of government in social studies. The students learned about the qualities of good leaders both in and out of government. We read a book about Rosa Parks and made a chart of all the leadership qualities she exhibited. We also learned about the rights and responsibilities of citizens in our country. The children interviewed family members to find out more about what a good citizen does. It was fun to hear all of the good examples that were shared!

We have been renewing our attention on our class mission statement so that we can remain focused to finish out the school year strong. We even recorded it to be played on Monday's upcoming morning announcements. Check it out!
