Class Updates:
Long has been celebrating cultural diversity all year. This week each classroom decorated their doors to display a message about diversity. Take a look at how our door turned out!
We have finished our unit on telling time in math. This week we will begin Chapter 11 on measurement. We will focus on lessons 1-4, which cover customary measurement in inches, feet, and yards.
In reading, we read an interesting Scholastic News article and watched a corresponding video about Amelia Earhart. It was a great review on using text features to learn more information and the kids were intrigued by the mystery. We also continued to learn about what good readers do while reading series books, including notice the author's choice of precise language that helps us see the characters and setting in our minds.
Poetry continues to be our focus in writing. Students are practicing how to edit their poems carefully for correct spelling and revise them to include the best word choice to convey the meaning of the poem. We learned how to write haiku poems as well. They are a special kind of poem with only three lines. The lines follow a syllable pattern of 5, 7, 5.
We have finished our study of government in social studies. The students learned about the qualities of good leaders both in and out of government. We read a book about Rosa Parks and made a chart of all the leadership qualities she exhibited. We also learned about the rights and responsibilities of citizens in our country. The children interviewed family members to find out more about what a good citizen does. It was fun to hear all of the good examples that were shared!
We have been renewing our attention on our class mission statement so that we can remain focused to finish out the school year strong. We even recorded it to be played on Monday's upcoming morning announcements. Check it out!
