Class Valentine's Day Parties will take place on Friday, February 12th at 2:00. If your child wishes, they may bring in Valentines to pass out to the students. If they do so, please make sure they have one for every student. We have 22 students in class, and a class list will be sent home in tomorrow's mail for reference. Please note, we will not be making boxes to collect Valentines in class. If your child wants to make one at home to bring in on party day, that is fine. They can also use a plastic bag or other container brought from home.
Class Updates:
Our DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program started last week. Officer Olson from the Crestwood Police Department will be teaching a DARE lesson to students once a week for ten weeks. All fifth graders participate in DARE and will have a DARE graduation in May.
In math, we are currently working on dividing decimals by whole numbers and other decimals. We are also dividing decimals by powers of ten. We are almost done with Chapter 6 and will begin reviewing this week to prepare for a test on Tuesday, February 9th. A practice test will come home later this week. If a student gets their test signed by a parent verifying that they studied at home, they can earn an extra point on their test. Our next big unit will be on fractions.

In reading, we have been working on making predictions about books based on evidence from the text. We have practiced making predictions before and during reading, as well as monitoring our predictions to either confirm them or adjust them based on further reading. The students have been trying out the Seesaw App to record book recommendations about their book club books, as well as to take pictures of their thinking and and responses that they bring to their book club discussions. Here is a look at some of their work.

Students are making good progress on their argumentative letters on chocolate milk in writing. They are working to make sure they have three strong reasons to support their claims, as well as specific evidence that relates to their reasons. Currently, we are working on balancing evidence with thinking and explanation. This week, the children will learn about addressing the counterargument in their writing, as well as how to write a strong introduction and conclusion to their piece.
We have a social studies test this Wednesday on Chapter 3, which covers European exploration. Students have all received a study guide to help them prepare for the test. The review pages in their Chapter 3 packets are also due on Wednesday. After our test, we will be learning about latitude and longitude and then begin a research project on an individual explorer.
