Weekly Update 12/14/19

Our Market Days businesses are up and running! Students are working in teams of three to design and manufacture goods for sale. Student selected goods include key chains, bookmarks, pencil toppers, and jewelry. Each group began by working through the Engineering Design Process to create their product. This included building, testing, and improving upon a prototype. The teams also created a name for their business along with a logo and slogan. Currently, the teams are busy producing their goods to prepare to "sell" them to third grade customers this coming week. They set production goals and we are tracking their progress towards their goals. I am excited to see how motivated the students are, and how well they are collaborating together.

In math, we wrapped up Chapter 4 on two-digit subtraction. We also started Chapter 6, which covers three-digit addition. Students will be using what they have already learned about regrouping to help them add larger numbers and become comfortable with the hundreds place value position.

The children are continuing to work on finding text evidence in reading and will wrap up our non-fiction unit this coming week. In writing, they have been working hard to finish their second draft of an opinion letter about a favorite book. Now, students will be selecting one of their opinion letters to publish.
