Weekly Update 5/3/19

We have completed our first two Junior Achievement lessons. Junior Achievement is helping to teach the students important lessons that relate to standards in our social studies curriculum, including communities, economics, and government. So far, each student has been assigned a job within a community. Students also worked in teams to "make donuts" for a donut factory and learned that both quantity and quality of goods are important when producing goods to sell. The children had the chance to design their own original donut flavors as well. Thank you to Mrs. Abram who has volunteered to teach our lessons!

We continued our study of government this week by discussing the positive characteristics of good leaders and citizens. We read a biography of Rosa Parks, which helped us brainstorm characteristics like "inspiring, helpful, and determined". Students also interviewed adults to find out their thoughts and were able to share what they learned about good citizens with the class. Finally, we learned about rights and responsibilities.

In math, we have finished our unit on measurement. Students have been practicing measuring and comparing the length of objects in customary units of centimeters and meters. They also learned to graph their measurement data on line plots. We reviewed on Friday, and will be having a Chapter 11 Test on Monday. Review pages were sent home your child's green folder. Math center have helped students review time and measurement skills.

Students are continuing to publish poems in writing and are designing the covers for their poetry portfolios. In reading, book clubs are continuing to meet. We also read a Scholastic News article on endangered animals highlighting the orangutan.
