Weekly Update 2/8/20

We were able to celebrate Global Day of Play on Wednesday!

In social studies, the students finished up their projects by recording Seesaw videos to share their work. This allowed them to practice their presentations for our Native American Museum. The children did an excellent job teaching Mrs. Craden's first grade students. The younger students toured each group's exhibit, and the 2nd graders explained all they learned about their region of study. Dr. Mach dropped by as well!

Now, we are moving on to science for the rest of the quarter. Students will be learning about the properties of matter as they work over the next several weeks to design and test a prototype for a penguin habitat at the zoo. So far, we have been researching what penguins need in their habitat to help them survive, as well as what features make a zoo habitat enjoyable for visitors. We also learned that both scientists and engineers need to work together to build zoo habitats. The children participated in a group sorting activity to compare and contrast the jobs of engineers and scientists.

In math, we have wrapped up our unit on subtraction. Next week, we will begin Chapter 8, which focuses on money. We will cover lessons 1-3. A goal from this chapter is for students to be able to recognize coins and know their value. They also need to be able to count the total value of coins up to one dollar. Having your child count spare change at home is a great way for them to practice as we move through this unit.

In reading, students learned that characters can have different perspectives and points of view. We have been using the characters of Frog and Toad from Frog and Toad Are Friends to examine a character's point of view about an event in the story. In writing, the children have started to work on a second informational book. They chose new topics and have been working on brainstorming their subtopics and facts to get ready to draft next week.
