Team Building and Leadership
The children worked in pairs to complete Lego building challenges. First, students had to use a set number and type of Lego pieces to build "Mr. Learnie" structures. After each team was successful, they were able to build a new structure of their choice. I am proud of the creativity and cooperation I saw!

Students filled out job applications to apply for classroom leadership jobs. Ask your child what job they have!
Math
Students spent the week learning routines for math centers. Each week the children will play partner games, work on the laptops and iPads, and complete problem solving activities that reinforce what they are learning. Here are a few of our completed Math About Me Projects as well.
We will begin Chapter 1 in Math on Monday, which focuses on basic concepts of addition and subtraction. We will cover lessons 1-4. Each day, students will bring home the homework page that corresponds with the lesson. This is a communication piece for you, so you know what students have learned that day. Students may complete the practice if they choose, but it is not something that needs to be turned in.
Reading
We have enjoyed some fantastic read aloud books so far this year! The students are doing a great job having "pair share" discussions about the books we read. Children are also learning to build their independent reading stamina and choose "just right books". I will be conferencing with each child and listening to them read in order to get ready for guided reading groups.
We also read our first Scholastic News article, which focused on having a growth mindset. Each child wrote a goal they would like to achieve in second grade. We will be displaying these in our classroom as a reminder. The students learned to keep practicing, ask for help, work with a buddy, and not give up to achieving their goals!
Writing
Here are some pictures of our emoji writing pieces from last week. After reading First Day Jitters, students picked out which emojis best represented their feelings on the first day of school. Then, they wrote about their emotions.
To get ready for writing workshop, the students created Heart Maps. Each section of the heart map contains pictures and words describing favorite and important things that can be used as writing topics.
Spelling
This week we used sight words to learn our spelling routines. Children will be using spelling menus to practice their spelling words in class. Each day this week, we have learned a new strategy from the menu. We will continue to practice next week. Our first official spelling week will occur the first week of September. More information to come soon!
Social Studies
We started our first unit on communities in social studies. Students learned that all communities have places to live, work, play, and solve problems. We discussed examples of those places in our community. Next week, the children will complete a team project to design their own communities!
