Weekly Update 8/26/17

We made it through our first full week of 2nd grade!

Important Reminders:

Thank you to everyone who came to Curriculum Night! If you were unable to attend, I placed a hard copy of my classroom handbook in your child's mail that came home on Friday.

The daily green folders have been updated with a copy of second grade homework expectations and a list of your child's logins and passwords for the various computer programs and apps we will be using throughout the year. The lists should remain stored in the plastic sleeve for use at home and school each day. The list also has the access information for all of our online text books. As a reminder, online text books can be found on the corresponding tab at the top of this blog. Please be aware that I have not yet introduced all of these resources to the students. We will be gradually exploring these one at a time as we progress into the school year. So far, the children have done a great job and remembering to bring their folders back and forth to school each day!

Class Updates:

What an amazing day we had on Eclipse Day! Thank you to all of the parents who came to help out. We spent the day learning about what an eclipse is, making a mini-book about the eclipse, experimenting with making shadows, and recording our observations. The kids did a great job!

A large focus for this week was to continue building our classroom community. Each child filled out a job application for a classroom leadership job. All students have been assigned their positions and they are off to a great start helping to keep our room organized and running smoothly! The students learned about whole body listening and are practicing this during our class meetings. Ask you child if they can remember all of the parts of their body they listen with. We also talked about the importance of having a growth mindset as we begin to learn new second grade concepts. We will be learning more about growth mindset throughout the year, but this chart gives you an idea of the concept.

In math we spent the week practicing routines for math centers. Students worked with learning partners to play games like Target Ten to work on their basic addition facts. The children also practiced accessing math apps and websites on our classroom iPads and laptops. Next week, we will begin Chapter 1, which covers applying addition and subtraction concepts.

During reading, we have been learning how to pick out "just right" books. The children have been filling their books boxes with books that are a good fit for them! They have also been practicing using their flexible seating options to read around the room. Next week, we will work on building our reading stamina each day.

In writing we have been reviewing what makes a complete sentence, as well as how to punctuate different types of sentences correctly. The students are also learning about the differences between nouns and verbs. Next week, we will start our first week of practicing spelling routines. The students will have a short list of high frequency words to learn. For the beginning of the year, all students will receive their words on Monday. We will have a quiz on five of those words on Friday.

We will begin our first social studies unit on Monday, which focuses on the students discovering the what a community is.

We ended the week with a cup stacking team building challenge! Teams had to build the tallest tower by moving cups using only their two pointer fingers.
