Class Update 5/7/15

Important Reminders:

With the end of the school year approaching quickly, there is a lot on the calendar!

This Friday, an ice cream truck and a bubble bus will be visiting the school. Students who want to buy ice cream will need to bring $1.00 with them.

LEAP students who are attending Space Camp next week have been given the assignments they are responsible for completing while they are gone. These assignments are due Monday, the 18th when they return to school.

Those students who earned a free ticket to Six Flags for completing the six hours of reading in the Read to Succeed program will have their tickets sent home in Tuesday's mail folder. Please be looking out for the tickets.

Our annual Field Day will take place on Thursday, May 14th. We are still looking for parent volunteers who would like to help out. Please use the Sign Up Genius form if you are interested in volunteering. Thank you for your consideration!

Please be aware that there is no school on Friday, May 15th due to teacher professional development.

5th Grade DARE Graduation will take place at 1:30 on Wednesday, May 20th. Parents are invited to attend the ceremony.

The 5th Grade Party is Thursday, May 21st.

The last day of school is Friday, May 22 and is a half day. Please know that lunch will not be served. Our end of the year Awards Ceremony will take place that day at 9:00.

Thank you to all of the parents who have brought in gifts for Teacher Appreciation Week!  I feel very spoiled!  I have appreciated all of your help and support throughout the school year as well!

Class Updates:

We had a great time at our STEM Day on Friday.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The children rotated through a variety of fun activities designed to get them interested in these subjects. Here are some pictures of our day:

Mad Science presented by Dr. Parker and Mr. Schoenekase:

Egg Drop - Designing and testing containers built to protect and egg:

Mini Dome - Students watched a Omni-Max style movie about forces of nature:

Students also built Lego structures and watched a science experiment with dry ice!

In math, we have been reviewing geometry and measurement concepts. Students made paper cubes in many sizes and worked to find the volume of the cubes. Then, they found everyday objects around the classroom that had the same estimated volume of the cubes they made. Next week, we will be finding volume of rectangular prisms, such as cereal boxes and pizza boxes. Thank you to everyone who donated boxes for this activity. The kids are excited for the challenge!

In reading, students are finishing up their final reading group books. In writing, the children have been working on a top secret Mother's Day project. We hope you will love it when the kids bring it home this weekend!

Our bowling field trip was a blast! The students participated in "disco bowling" complete with lights and music. Congratulations to Spencer who had the high scoring game for the boys!
