Weekly Update 10/18/19

In math, we have completed the first four lessons in Chapter 5, which covers place value. Students are learning about the place value positions of the ones, tens, and hundreds. They have practiced making numbers with base ten block models, as well as writing them in standard and expanded form. Math centers have been updated to review concepts from previous chapters, including arrays. Students are also completing math activities in Seesaw. Look for some new posts on Seesaw coming soon!

In reading our focus has been on identifying the story elements of fiction books, including the setting, characters, problem, and solution. Students are working on being able to retell the events of a story in order. The children are also making their final touches to their published personal narrative stories.

The children have been highly engaged in their final projects for our maps and geography unit in social studies. Each child has been building a model of a special place that they wrote about in one of their personal narrative stories. They used recyclable materials to make their models and collaborated with their writing partners to help with ideas and problem-solving. Now, students will make maps that correspond to the models of the places. Next week, students will get a chance to celebrate all of their hard work and share out their writing, models, and maps with their peers.
