Class Update 11/4/18

The class had a great time at the Halloween party! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who worked hard to make the day fun for the students.

We began a new unit in science about matter. Students are learning that objects can be made from a variety of materials, and that each material has different properties. Using Mystery Science, the students were given a scenario of being stranded on a deserted tropical island. Using only items washed up in luggage they had to test materials for softness, stiffness, and absorbency to see which would be best suited to make a hat to protect themselves from the hot sun. The children were very creative with their designs!

We finished up Chapter 5 in math. Now that students have a good understanding of place value, we will move to Chapter 3. This chapter covers addition of two-digit numbers with regrouping. This week we will focus on lessons 2-4.

In reading, we have started a unit on non-fiction. As a class, we are reading all about tigers and practiced using the KWL strategy to record what we already know, what we wonder, and what we learn as we read. Students are also beginning to learn about how to locate and use text features to learn more information. Our focus this week was on titles and headings. Our Scholastic News article taught about the process by which pumpkins decompose. Students worked together in partners to read the article.

We are currently reviewing the parts of a friendly letter in writing. Students are practicing writing letters to different audiences about a variety of topics. This will help prepare them for our upcoming opinion writing unit. The students also finished up their monster descriptive writing pieces. Take a look at some of their work!

Several Flat Stanleys made their way back to our classroom this week. They traveled near and far - to St. Louis, New York, Texas, Florida, Connecticut, and California!
