Class Update 10/6/18

We had a cozy day hanging out in our pajamas on Friday!

In math, the students practiced solving word problems using skip counting and repeated addition number sentences. Then, they learned how to represent a repeated addition sentence with an array. To review this concept each student created a skyscraper with an array of their choice to represent the number of windows on the building. Take a look at pictures from our project below. Next week, we will cover lessons 6 and 7 from Chapter 2 and then review the chapter for a test on Friday. Look for review pages to come home on Thursday.

In reading, we have been continuing to add to our "toolbox" of decoding strategies for tricky words. Students are practicing using more than one strategy at a time, such as getting their mouths ready for the first word and checking the text and pictures for meaning. They also learned to substitute in a word that might make sense to help them determine the tricky word. The children are recording tricky words they find on their stop and jots. We finished the week with a Scholastic News article about spiders. Students learned how spiders make webs and how to read a diagram of a spider's body parts.

In writing, the class has been moving through the drafting process of their second personal narrative story. Next week, we will revise and edit the the second draft. Then, students will select one of their stories to make a published copy of.

Some of our first Flat Stanleys have arrived back from their trips! The children had a good time looking at pictures from Stanley's adventures on a farm in IL and in Lake St. Louis, MO.

In social studies, we spent the week learning about maps. Students practiced using map keys, map grids, and compass roses. The children worked to find the "address" of their names on a grid and played a partner game to work on following the cardinal directions on a compass rose.
