Class Update 9/7/18

The students have been using habit #6 to synergize during reading workshop! They were able to go above and beyond their stamina goal for independent reading. Lessons over the past week have focused on how to take a "sneak peak" of a book, which includes using the title, front and back covers, and table of contents to make predictions before reading. Partners practiced thinking aloud with their partners as they previewed their books. Next week, students will practice making connections to books during their guided reading groups.

In math, the children worked on using doubles facts and the make a ten strategy to add three addends together. We have also been working on word problems with addition. Next week, we will focus on basic facts and strategies with subtraction. We will cover lessons 8-12 in Chapter 1.

In writing, we read a book titled The Best Part of Me. The book has writing by elementary students who picked a part of their body they liked the best and wrote about why it was the best part. This inspired us to do some writing of our own. Each student picked their favorite body part and had to write a topic sentence, three reasons, and a conclusion sentence describing the importance of the part they chose.

We continued our study of communities in social studies this week by comparing and contrasting urban, suburban, and rural communities. The students learned that these three types of communities usually form a "bulls eye" pattern with the urban community at the center. Each student drew their own bulls eye with drawings of the types of places to work live and play for each type of community. We will wrap up this unit on Monday and begin our first science unit on Tuesday.

We enjoy a brain break each day in class. Lately, we have been participating in yoga! We have also been working on different ways to get to know one another during our morning meetings.
