Class Update 2/3/18

Important Reminders:

This Wednesday, February 7th, is an Early Release Day with a 1:40 dismissal time. Please make sure your child knows how they are going home that day in case it is different from their regular routine.

The KidStuff Fundraiser is wrapping up. If you have not already done so, please either purchase the KidStuff  book that was sent home with your child, or return the book to school if you do not wish to participate. The cost of the book is $25. All sales benefit Long Elementary. Books must be purchased or returned by this Monday February 5th.

The Jump Rope for Heart campaign is ongoing. All donations need to be returned by Friday, February 9th. The American Heart Association is encouraging online registration/donations this year. By going online, students can learn ways to be heart healthy, even if they are unable to make a donation. Our final celebration assembly for Jump Rope for Heart will take place on February 14th.

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming back to Long starting on February 6th. Fliers went home with students in their green folders on Tuesday. In addition, the All for Books coin challenge will coincide with the book fair. Any coins donated will be used to purchase books for our classroom. Scholastic also matches donations for students and classrooms in need. Specific information on this program is attached to the book fair fliers.

Here is some important information in preparation for Valentine's Day:

  • Our classroom party will take place on February 14th.
  • Students may bring in Valentines to pass out to classmates on the 14th. This is not mandatory, but if a child participates, please make sure they have a Valentine for each student in the class.
  • I will send a class roster home with students' names on Tuesday in their green folders. We have 20 students in our class.
  • Per school district guidelines, Valentines may not have candy attached to them.
  • We will be creating Valentine's Day bags for collecting Valentines in class on February 13th. I will provide the bags and some decorations. I would welcome donations for additional decorations, including glitter glue, foam shapes, stickers, etc. Thank you!

Class Updates:

We were fortunate to have Miss Missouri visit Long on Monday! She read her children's book about celebrating diversity to the children. Students held a question and answer session with her to learn more about the role of being Miss Missouri and about the process of writing and publishing a book. To end the program, Miss Missouri taught the children her talent, which is Bollywood dancing. The students had a great time learning from such a positive role model!

In math, we are finishing up Chapter 7 on subtracting three-digit numbers. We will be reviewing the first part of the week and having a test on Thursday.

Our study on character traits continues in reading. The children are learning to compare and contrast characters from different books. We read The Paper Bag Princess and are comparing the traits from the princess in that book to the one in The Princess and the Pizza. Students are using sticky notes to record their thinking about the characters in their independent reading books.

Writing partners are helping each other by reading each other's informational books. Students are leaving notes for each other with questions about what they would like to learn more about regarding their partners' topics. Students will use these questions to help revise their writing to make it stronger and more informative.

The class repeated our experiment with toy cars from last week in science, but this time each group changed one variable to see how it would affect the results. Some variables included the size of the toy car and the height of the ramp. They learned that one change can make a big difference in the data! We also started new lab manuals and conducted a new experiment with catapults. The children brainstormed various catapult designs with a given set of supplies. Then, we set out to answer the question of whether a cotton ball or a ping pong ball would travel farther when launched from the catapult. We will finish up the results and conclusion part of that lab next week. Students are learning so much about pushes, pulls, friction, and motion in these hands-on activities. There are also learning measurement concepts and applying their new knowledge of adding bigger numbers!
