Class Update 5/5/17

Important Reminders:

There are lots of end of the activities going on for 5th grade! Here is a list of important dates.

• May 10: Science Center Field Trip - Students must bring their lunch or order a sack lunch from the cafeteria.
• May 11: Ice Cream Truck and Bubble Bus - Students can buy ice cream for $1.00.
• May 12: No School - Teacher Professional Development
• May 16: Truman Fly-Up Day - Students will have a chance to visit the middle school.
• May 17: Bowling Field Trip - Permission slips went home this week. Please sign and return the slip to school with your child. Students may bring money to buy snacks while at the bowling alley.
• May 18: DARE Graduation at 1:30 PM - Parents are invited to attend!
• May 19: Field Day - Parent volunteers are still needed for this event. Please use the Sign Up Genius link if you can help out.
• May 25: Fifth Grade Party - Parent volunteers are needed for this event as well. Please sign up here.

Due to recent canceled school days for flooding, students will need to make up two sessions of state MAP Testing for science. Once dates are scheduled, I will post them on the homework tab of the blog. 5th graders at LEAP Space Camp will make up the testing once they return from camp. I am proud of all the effort and hard work students have put into MAP Testing so far!

Class Updates:

In math, we are reviewing customary and metric measurement. We will be having a quiz this week on Tuesday, May 9. Students will be given a study guide, and they should also be studying the benchmark measurements on the yellow measurement sheet in their folders.

In reading and writing, the students will be working on poetry. Students will learn to write a variety of short poems, including haiku, limerick, acrostic, and free verse among others. The children will also read a variety of poems and study the figurative language and imagery being used by published authors. Many students have finished writing their DARE Essays. The last day to work on essays in class will be Tuesday, May 9. Any remaining work on the essays will then need to be done for homework and due Wednesday, May 10. The students are also participating in their final rounds of book clubs for the school year.

In social studies, students are working on a "Create a Colonist" project. Each student is inventing a colonist, much like they would invent a character for a book. Students get to decide everything about their colonist, from their name, age, occupation, which colony they live in, and what their daily life is like. Students have already started their research, which they will use to help them draw an illustration of their colonist and write a letter from their colonist's point of view.

Students will end the year in science by completing a project about a famous inventor. Students will chose one inventor to research and then present what they have learned using either Google Slides, a newspaper, brochure, or poster.
