Our class Valentine's Day Party is coming up on Friday, February 10th. Students will have an ice cream bar for their snack and then will be watching a movie. I will be sending home a class list with all students in case your child wishes to bring in Valentine's Day cards to pass out. We have 19 students total. Please note, if Valentines are brought in, there must be one for each child. Also, this year per Lindbergh policy Valentines cannot contain any food items attached to them. We will not be making Valentine boxes or bags in class. However, if your child would like to make one at home to bring in to collect Valentines that is fine. Or, they could bring a plastic bag or similar item to take their Valentines home in.
The Major Savor Fundraiser is underway. Collection dates are February 9, 10, and 13. Students brought home information packets in their green folders yesterday. The Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser packets are due Monday the 6th.
Class Updates:
We have started our unit on fractions. In order to review fraction basics, students completed a hands-on activity to find out the fraction of each color of candy hearts that come in a box. Coming up we will explore how fraction is related to division and how factors and multiples can be used to help understand fractions. Students will be creating equivalent fractions, putting fractions into their simplest form, and comparing the size of fractions. Improper fractions and mixed numbers will also be covered.
The children participated in their first practice debate in reading. After the debate, the teams reflected on what evidence was most effective as well as what research they still needed to conduct. Teams have been working hard to thoroughly explore both sides of their selected topics and will do another practice debate next week before selecting which side they will argue for in a final debate. Book clubs are moving along and students are having valuable discussions about their novels.
We will be wrapping up the argumentative essays on the chocolate milk debate next week. Students will now focus on final revisions and editing for a final draft. Next, students will use the skills they learned from the chocolate milk debate to write a second argumentative paper. They will be able to choose their topic from a variety of possibilities, including whether or not recess should be held in middle school and whether or not the United States should get rid of the penny.
In social studies we are finishing up our explorer poster projects. Our last day in class to work on them is Tuesday. Then, we will begin out next chapter which covers further exploration in North America that eventually will lead to the first settlements and colonies.
