Class Updates:
Goal Setting - Students selected one item from their 5th Grade Bucket Lists to focus on for first quarter. Each student filled out a goal pennant that listed three specific actions they could take to accomplish their goal. They had some great ideas!
Math - We are wrapping up Chapter 1, which covers place value of whole numbers and decimals. Students completed a decimals project with their initials to practice writing the same number in word form, decimal form, and as a fraction. We also had some center activities that helped us practice place value positions and basic facts. The kids had fun building towers each time they got a multiplication fact correct! Students will have a test over Chapter 1 on Tuesday, September 22. A study guide and practice test have been given to the students to help them prepare. Our next unit will focus on multiplying whole numbers.
Reading - The students have been learning ways to clarify unknown words as they read, including focusing on word parts like prefixes and suffixes, and using context clues. They are also practicing being "close readers" who read text multiple times to gain deeper understanding with each reading. In reading groups, we will begin to work on finding text evidence to support our thinking.
Writing - The class is continuing to work on drafting of their personal narratives. They have learned about strategies for writing strong leads and have revised their writing to create a lead that grab's the reader's attention. In both reading and writing, we are discussing story elements that are needed in narrative writing such as characters, setting, and plot.
Social Studies - We have finished our lessons for Chapter 1 covering geography and resources. Students have been learning how natural, capital, and human resources work together, as well as how landforms can be changed by natural forces and human activities. We will be starting a fun project to wrap up the unit called the My World Project.
