For students participating in PRISM, projects are due tomorrow so that volunteers can check over the projects for completeness. Please leave projects in the hall outside our classroom. Long's PRISM night will be February 19 from 3:45 - 6:00.
Our Valentine's Day Party is Friday, February 13th at 2:00. Children may bring in Valentines for the class if they wish. Please know that this is optional. If your child does opt to bring Valentines, please make sure they bring one for every student in the class. We have 22 students, and class lists were emailed home last week. If any type of candy or treats are attached to the Valentines, they must be free of nuts or latex due to allergies.
Six Flags Read to Succeed forms are due by February 25th.
We are approximately at the mid-quarter point of third quarter. Please make sure to check SIS from time to time to see your child's grades. If your child is struggling with a subject, they still have several weeks to improve upon their average.
Wednesday, February 11th is an Early Release Day, with a 1:40 PM dismissal. Please make sure your child knows how they will be going home that day in case it is different from a typical day.
The Book Fair begins on February 12th in the library.
Class Updates:
In math, we have finished up our unit on decimals, and the students also learned the rules for the order of operations to help them with solving expressions. We have started a unit on fractions, and the children completed a fun hands-on activity with Smarties candy to review the basics of fractions. Over the next few weeks, we will cover equivalent fractions, making fractions into simplest form, and comparing the size of fractions. We will also look at how fractions and decimals are related.
Now that the students have had a chance to read and write a variety of poems, they have started working on creating their poetry anthologies. Anthologies will include a sampling of original poems written by the students, as well as a selection of poems published by famous authors that the students will analyze. Each child will also be memorizing a favorite poem to recite to the class. Here is a sample of some of the poetry written in class so far. The hearts are "friendship cinqains". Students interviewed a classmate and wrote about about their special qualities.
In reading, we have been working on identifying the main idea and supporting details for sections of non-fiction text. In addition, we have focused on cause and effect in both fiction and non-fiction. Students have discovered that cause and effect can be structured many ways, such as one cause with multiple effects, or a chain of cause and effect. The children also inferred potential causes of real world effects found in photographs.
The children have been working hard on their explorer projects in social studies, and students should be wrapping them up this week. Students are looking forward to sharing their posters with each other. Our next chapter in social studies will be on the New England colonies that helped comprise the original 13 colonies.
