Class Update 8/24/14

Important Reminders:

If you have not filled out the beginning of the year forms for the office or submitted the $12 for supplies and class magazines, please do so as soon as possible.  Thank you!

As I mentioned on curriculum night, we are using the Class Dojo website as our behavior management system this year.  If you have created your parent account, you should have received your first weekly report emailed to you on Friday.  This website is how I will also let you know about any late or missing homework assignments.

Thank you to all of the parents who took their time to come to curriculum night!  If you were unable to make it, I sent a copy of all information that was distributed home in your child's Tuesday mail.  It was in a yellow folder.  Included in that folder was the information to get signed up with the Class Dojo.

Please remember that any time your child is going home in a way that is different from their regular daily routine, a note must be sent.  If your child plans on walking or biking home, they must have a permit on file with the office.  Permits can be obtained in the office if you need one.

We are in need of some "wish list" items for our classroom.  If students have zero late or missing homework assignments for the week, they earn a piece of candy.  Any candy donations would be greatly appreciated! Please avoid candy that contains nuts or is produced on the same line with nut products.  We also need magazines for a variety of projects we will be completing this year.  If you have old magazines at home that you no longer need and that are school appropriate, please send them in with your child.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Class Updates:

In math, we have been reviewing the procedures for math workshop.  Math journal covers were decorated with numbers that are important in the students' lives. Students have been working in centers to practice multiplication facts.  All children practiced the steps to log in to their online math text books. Here is a link to a step-by-step video in case your child needs help accessing their online math book at home. They also used the Xtra Math website to begin fact practice on the computer.  If your child is struggling with their basic facts in multiplication or division, I strongly encourage them to work on Xtra Math at home.  This week we will begin Chapter 1 on place value.

In reading we have been working on building our stamina to be able to read for longer periods of time.  We are reviewing the genres of both fiction and non-fiction books, as well as poetry.  We will continue to work on genres this week as we write book recommendations.  In writing, students drew pictures of what they did over the summer inside some fun summer sunglasses!  Then, they wrote friendly letters explaining their drawings. We will be beginning our first unit on personal narratives this week.

In social studies, the class is reviewing basic geography skills and taking a closer look at the landforms of the United States.  Children are practicing reading a variety of different maps.  There is a quiz on the continents and oceans on Wednesday.

Goal setting is an important practice at Long School.  The students each made a "Fifth Grade Bucket List" of ten things they want to accomplish by the end of the school year.  We also brainstormed ways to make our classroom environment positive and productive throughout the year.  They made some fantastic goals!
